This morning, I didn’t want to get out of bed. I had every intention of grabbing my laptop and going to lie in the bed, and I did. I then began working on my blog. Then the computer started to die, so I got up and started working on my desktop. While I was so focused on the aesthetics of my blog, God was not having it. He said to me, “Spend time with me” not just once but about 3 times. I was out of order. How could I be so focused on what the outside looked like and disregard what the inner parts of me looked like? I hear you, God! So, I grabbed my bible, and other materials I use for my bible study. The funny thing is, I never work on business stuff first. I always do my study time, what made this morning so different? Maybe I thought that since I study every day, I don’t have to today, but that makes no sense. Today, God reminded me to Stay Salty Sis. And that was a whole word let me explain.
I began my study with a devotional, I am on day 49 of the 100 Days Less Hustle More Jesus and here I was hustling lol. I was drawn to one of the key verses, Make your light shine, so others will see the good you do and will praise your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16 CEV stood out to me. I have been on this journey to allow Jesus to shine through me. So one of the things that I do to take my devotional to the next level is to do Verse Mapping (if you want a free printable, click here) it allows me to really understand the deeper meaning, the context and more. I did my verse mapping a little differently today though, I also stepped back to read what was before it. The verses that started the chapter was the Beatitudes and I remember a deaconess saying they are the BE ATTITUDEs this shows how your attitude needs to be! Then it was the Salt verse… and I was stuck in research mode.
This tells us to be salty. But what is salt?
Stay Salty Sis- What Salt Represents
- Salt is a seasoning– It brings the flavors out! If we are to be the salt as seasoning, then we are to bring out the good around us.
- Salt as a preservative– Salt is used to keep things from spoiling. If we are to be salt as a preservative, then we are to preserve the goodness around us.
- Salt as a commodity– Salt was used as money, it has value. If we are to be salt as a commodity, we are then to be valuable to be used.
- Being so valuable, soldiers in the Roman army were sometimes paid with salt instead of money. Their monthly allowance was called “salarium” (“sal” being the Latin word for salt). This Latin root can be recognized in the French word “salaire” — and it eventually made it into the English language as the word “salary.” NPR
- Salt as part of their offering– Salt was used when they sprinkled it on the incense which showed the covenant of salt. Salt doesn’t change, it can be dissolved but when the water dries out then there are salt crystals left over. If we are to be salt as part of an offering, it shows our promise to God to serve as believers.
- Leviticus 2:13
- Exodus 30:34-35
- Numbers 18:19
Stay Salty Sis- Don’t Lose Your Flavor
We are to be the Salt of the Earth! We are to be of value, preserving, and bringing out the goodness! So what happens when we lose our flavor? We become unfit for our role as believers. When we look back like Lot’s wife, she looked back, regarded the past, was concerned about… She got consumed with the world and was no longer useful, she lost her preserving qualities. She became a symbol for us to be reminded of staying salty or losing your saltiness.
If you are focused on the wrong thing, like me working on the outer appearance rather than maintaining my saltiness through studying the word then we start to lose our flavor. You cannot resalt salt! Once it is gone, the bland salt will be thrown out to be trampled on.
It Is A Lifestyle
Ever eaten some bland chicken? It is like, why have the salt hidden in the cabinet if you aren’t going to use it? It is as if, you are scared to bring out the flavor but why? Chicken can be SOOOO good! Too many times we are afraid to use salt for many reasons and this is a way for it to lose its flavor and we don’t want that. To Stay Salty is a lifestyle, you are to go and be valuable bringing out the amazing flavors of God! You are to be a witness and to serve! You are to not be thrown out because you are unfit for sacrificial use.
My Challenge To You
Maintain the integrity of your salt– In order to stay salty, we need to make sure there are maintenance checks daily. Make sure that it isn’t exposed to things that will suck the saltiness out. A little salt can go a long way, so be sure to serve in any capacity whether it is helping someone pick up something they dropped, or leading a bible study, or being a witness and sharing your testimony.
What are your thoughts? I would love to know how you stay salty sis!
