Bosses Who Slay- Tamika Newhouse

BougieBlackBlogger

I had the pleasure of interviewing a serious Boss Who Slays! Tamika Newhouse is a self-published bestselling author who founded Delphine Publications, at the age of 21; Tamika appeared on various bestseller lists and won Self Published Author of the Year at the 2009 African American Literary Awards only 9 months after her debut novel. In 2010 she was inducted into Who’s who in Black San Antonio and she landed a major publishing deal without an agent and still continues to write independent projects. Read more of her bio.

Only 29 years old, Tamika is a powerhouse. Speaking with her was pure motivation and inspiration.  Check out out the interview!

Teen Years:

Tamika met a boy and fell in love at a young age but she was not “hot in the pants” or skipped school she was a well rounded teen, but made a choice that turned her into a teen mother. She had to really grow up at the age of 14 as a teen mother. She had great support from her mother.  Tamika reflected on being 8 years old when she realized her passion for writing. She wanted to be an “authorist” as she would say back in the day.

Motherhood is such a wonderful blessing and I believed she used this as fuel to go after what she really wanted. Tamika said, Tamika 1“What ever you want to do you have to speak it into existence and work at it.” And that is what she did. Three months after the passing of her mother she debuted her first novel and opened her first business at age 20. Became a self publisher and this opened her world to many great endeavors.

Currently her daughter is 13 and her son is 8. She is a publisher, author, works with 15 authors, does brand management, a literary agent, media manager, and produces an annual awards show. I was exhausted just listening to all the many things she has her hands in, I was like how do you do it?

How she makes it work:

Having to manage the many businesses, personal and family life, Tamika hires interns and consultants but is a “Jackie” of all trades. She manages seven brands and they all need so many things to keep it up and running. She is a busy lady but has a handful of people that she works with. She has to live by her phone. If it is not on the agenda then she will forget. She makes sure she sleeps 6-7 hours a day though, that is important. But she has learned how to balance life. Tamika also makes sure she unwinds, she dates, has a glass of wine, and has family time.

Advice to people who want to be an entrepreneur:

  • Be smart about it, you cannot just quit your job right away
  • You will have to sacrifice and things will have to suffer but family should not have to suffer. Get your family involved.
  • Research the field
  • Volunteer or intern with someone who is already doing what you want to do.
  • Create a schedule and stick to it.
  • Entrepreneurship is very fulfilling but very stressful. Learn to find a healthy balance.
  • Be prepared to be misunderstood
  • Be prepared to cry
  • Be prepared to want to quit
  • Be prepared for family and friends to ask for your product

What inspires you to keep moving?

Tamika: “I am often told that I inspire others and that is my inspiration. Sometimes I implant myself into peoples journeys to be better. I offer a shoulder and I am an energy source for others. If I were to quit and I inspire all these people I may discourage them and I do not want to contribute to them being uninspired.”

Well Tamika just wrote her first Erotica Novel called Plain Jane. She is very excited and a part 2 will be coming soon.
