Reaping What We Sow: Haggai Calls to Prioritize God’s Kingdom

Studying Haggai made me reflect on making sure I prioritize God’s Kingdom instead of what I can do with my own power and knowledge. In the scriptures, Haggai prioritized their luxury homes while the Lord’s temple lay in ruins. This is 18 years after returning to the Holy Land out of exile. These people were the remnant, those that committed their lives to God but somehow, they decided to not rebuild the temple. I reflected on the temple, back then, that is where God dwelled, but now God dwells in us. We are the Lord’s temple.

In chapter 1, we see that they were sowing and barely reaping anything. They wore clothes but were still cold. They had things yet still not satisfied. They put their wages in bags with holes. Everything slipped through their hands. When we prioritize self first, we see so much lack. When we prioritize God first, He will add to you! Let’s chat…

Bible Study on Haggai chapters 1 and 2

  1. The Principle of Priority: Haggai emphasizes the importance of prioritizing the building of God’s temple over personal pursuits and material gain. This underscores the principle of putting God’s kingdom first in our lives.
  2. The Consequences of Neglect: Haggai warns that neglecting God’s work leads to spiritual barrenness and unfruitfulness. Just as the Israelites experienced hardship and lack despite their efforts, so too do we when we prioritize worldly pursuits over God’s kingdom.
  3. Divine Restoration: Despite the Israelites’ neglect, Haggai offers hope in the form of divine restoration. By refocusing their priorities on God and His kingdom, they can experience His blessings and provision once again.
  4. The Challenge to Modern Believers: Haggai’s message resonates with contemporary believers who often find themselves caught up in the busyness of life, neglecting their spiritual lives and God’s work. It challenges us to examine our priorities and realign them with God’s kingdom.
  5. The Fruit of Prioritization: By prioritizing God’s kingdom, believers can experience spiritual fruitfulness and fulfillment. Haggai’s call serves as a reminder that true prosperity comes from seeking first the kingdom of God.
