Over the past year, I have been mentally examining how I want to simplify my life. Coming up with master plans on career, home and more yet, I feel that I have made it so much more complicated. Mindful Simplicity by Yolanda Acree came just in time.
I’m the person that believes that life is simple, relationships are simple and that living a simple life is a necessity. However, I was reminded that there are so many things out of our control that may stop us from living a simple life. I seek simple and peace on a daily especially as a way to rejuvenate, relax and relieve daily stressors.
Yolanda sent me this book and a word that stood out to me was “Harmony” in the subheading. I was reminded of the times I sang in the Praise and Worship team, always making sure to hear others, celebrate different tones, but connect them in a way that moved those listening. I wanted to then connect the many facets of my life to make a beautiful simple sound.
My biggest areas that I wanted to simplify were finances, relationships, food, and time management! I chose these as I read the chapters that were in the book. However, as I read, there were nuggets in each chapter.
A few of my favorite nuggets in Mindful Simplicity
- In part one, chapter one, Yolanda Acree explains that, “…simplicity is not dwelling on the past or the future, but are focused at the moment at hand” This made total sense about mindfulness and being simple. When we think so far into the future we tend to overthink and in result, overcomplicate things that have not even presented itself. My thought is that if you take care of the present, the future will work itself out. As for the past, we no longer live there… so it is time to move on!
- Also in this chapter, she emphasizes that being mindful as it relates to your values that clarity is needed with your priorities and goals. So many of us accrue not only things but thoughts, habits and more when we are seeking with no clear end in mind. This will definitely impact us and hinder the lifestyle of simplicity in a mindful way.
She goes in to give us tips on decluttering physical and mental space. She taps into strategies on our food intake and being mindful as we choose our foods and how we enjoy them.
The book, an easy read just for comprehension, but when you are ready to apply the tips and strategies that will help you, reread it and go slower! I learned that it was a process and the process is so much more impactful than the end goal!
If I were you, I would start with chapter 11. This is if you want to start with a purpose! I am an aficionado of self-reflection and journaling so chapter 11 will be a great start to set up your journal. Think about the end goals, areas you want to focus on and as you read, take notes of the tips in chapter 11 to help guide your journey to creating a simple lifestyle mindfully.
Well, I hope this review will help you go and grab the book and support this beautiful sis!
