Welcome to Bougie Behavior Podcast Living Stories series! Chatting with 14 phenomenal women about taking back the narrative!
In this episode, I have the honor of speaking with an amazing woman, Tracy Walker. We are talking about how to co-author your child’s or other young people’s stories. How can we as adults who have lived and learned, help young people to learn and live by empowering them.
When I talked with Tracy Walker, one thing that stood out was, “Be Their Advocate” this is especially true for your children and the youth that are connected to you in some way.

Ways to Advocate For The Youth To Help Them Tell Their Story
Do everything out of love and give them grace
The tone, the body language, the words, yes we can get upset at the things they do, but do our interactions read I love you or I can’t stand you?
Talk with them, not at them
Lectures are boring, how will they develop critical thinking skills if they are not engaging in dialogue.
Ask them questions
Not yes or no questions, but questions that make them think about their stance on things, how they see things and more. While watching a movie ask, “What did you think about how they treated so and so?”
Listen to them
Being young is hard and finding the right words is even more challenging. Give them a safe space where they trust you to navigate their thoughts.
Don’t offer advice
“Back in my day…” Times have changed. Allow them to understand their situation where you are mirroring their thoughts, they know the answer deep down, they need to access that without so much influence. Now, if they ask what you think, then maybe give some but not so much that they have to solely rely on others to make their decisions.
Expose them to the world
A closed mind can breed some negative thoughts. Cultures, traditions, places, food… the world offers so much!
About Tracy Walker
I’m the owner/educational consultant of Tutor Doctor Allen and Plano. We provide virtual and in-home tutoring for students of all ages, grade levels and subjects. Before Tutor Doctor, I spent over 20 years working for a Fortune 500 company in several marketing and advertising roles. It was great work while it lasted, but I was in search of a new field where I could drive change in the community. When the idea came along to own a Tutor Doctor office, I quickly jumped on the opportunity. We worked with an in-home tutor for my oldest son when he was in 1st grade and again in 3rd grade, so I understand how beneficial it is as a parent to have someone come to your home, on your time, and provide the academic support that your child (and family) needs. The passion I have to see my own children succeed in school is the same passion I bring to the community. Sometimes it takes a village and I’m here to do my part to help.
