Artist On The Move- Lex Lebron

I get so inspired seeing people so passionate about their art and work. I just feel that not enough people get to witness such greatness and so that is why I am working hard to show the world beauty through art form! This is number three in the series of Artists on the Move, let me introduce to you Lex Lebron.

Artist on the move

I met this talented young lady in a Facebook group called Do You Boo- my favorite group hands down. The people who are in there are so supportive and talented. I loved seeing her posts of new pictures she had created! There was a time where Lex asked people to drop a selfie so that she could practice on her skin tones and all the gorgeous selfies came flooding. I believe if you do not practice your art it will just be a hobby. I believe artists who spend hours at a time perfecting their art deserve nothing but love and support.

Her works, to me are soft and delicate which gives me a sort of calm and peace. I love that she does portraits of people it immortalizes them in a way that no selfie could ever do.

The interview:

Tell me about who you are, where you are from, hobbies, passions, favorites?

My name is Lex, I was born in Mt.Vernon, Ny and now live in Northeast Philly. I love to read, mostly self help non-fiction kind of books lately. One of my favorites right now is Creative Thinking by Shakti  Gawain and True Love by Thich Nhat Hanh. Or anything by Thich Nhat Hanh really. I also love watching movies and breaking them down in my head as I watch.
Tell me when did you realize you had talent and how did you and your family go about cultivating your talent?

When I was really little my brother and I would watch anime and play video games a lot.We used to go to the public library and print out characters from the shows to draw at home. That’s when I noticed I was pretty good at it. I became the kid in school who would walk around with a binder full of bad drawings of my classmates. My family is very talented, so it was natural to encourage me to pursue art.

What is your favorite performance? Why?

I am so in love with Roger’s and Hamerstein’s Cinderella. The play, which I’ve never seen in person, but definitely the movie starring Brandy. The music makes me cry to this day!
Where do you get the most inspiration for your work?

Seeing so many beautiful black women on the internet. I love that if you follow the right groups of people it shapes your experience online. Black women today are starting so many new businesses and declaring “Hey I’m here and I’m dong my thing!” I love to see that and I want to contribute to the movement of promoting good images of us.

Have you taken any classes to perfect your skills and talents? Why or why not?

I attended art school for about a year and a half. In the field of game art, which I love. The school got to be really expensive and I began to focus on different types of art. Many of the artist I mentor under and look up to have never went to art school.
What advice would you give someone who is new to your area if talent?

I’m no expert but I would say, find what you love to do. That’s what’s going to keep you focused and motivated to keep going. If you are really passionate about something you will attract others who feel the same way. They will be your tribe. Also, don’t do this for the money, if I only did this for money I would have quit a long time ago!
Are there some difficulties in what you do? Care to share?

Sometimes I feel drained. It takes a lot of brain power to imagine something in your head, to have that vision, and then to manifest that into the real world. In this field it’s tough to get people to value what I do. I could work myself to the bone and have someone argue about why they should have that painting for free.
What new skill or technique would you love to learn and why?

Sculpture. It’s fascinating to me how someone can take a marble slab and turn it into a person. Looking back at the old masters works such as “David” I understand the skill and time that must have went into that. At the same time I see so many men walking around who would be great sculptures!
Anything else you would like to share, nuggets of wisdom, stories, memories etc.

People tell me all the time what a great gift from God I have. I would just like people to know that I wasn’t born with this talent! I had to work and learn and grow, just like any other skill. It’s not easy for me to sit down and create something. I think if people can understand this they will value art more. If anything I was given a passion for art. As long as you have that you can go get whatever else you want.

I hope that reading through her interview was not only inspiring but eye opening. Lex talked about this movement of amazing black women that are entrepreneurs and really making it happen, this is a beautiful thing. I love that there is support but there could be more. It was great getting to know Lex more than her posts of pictures. I hope that this encourages you to share and show your support for this young lady!
